Hackers Drain $2.7 Million From OKX DEX
The OKX DEX suffered a significant hack, with customers shedding tens of millions after hackers grabbed management of a proxy admin account.
Blockchain safety agency SlowMist Zone first raised the alarm concerning the assault on social media platform X. Their preliminary investigation suggests the proxy admin’s non-public key was leaked, permitting the hackers to hijack management of the DEX proxy contract.
As customers started reporting unauthorized withdrawals late on December twelfth, OKX rapidly deactivated the contract and promised full compensation to victims of the cyber heist.
The assault bore similarities to earlier exploits by a hacker collective tied to main breaches of LunaFi, Uno Re, RVLT, and different DeFi protocols. In response, blockchain intelligence firm Arkham Intel has supplied a bug bounty for data resulting in the identification of the OKX hackers. Suggestions supplied by the bounty program can be shared with OKX to help their ongoing investigation.
This newest incursion highlights the dangers related to decentralized finance, regardless of claims that “decentralization” enhances safety. To this point in 2023, over $1.5 billion has been stolen from cryptocurrency suppliers by hacks, scams and exploits.
